August 24th, 2012 at 10:33am | Last Updated at 4:40pWith an estimated 400,000 people watching Sault Ste. Marie’s Phil Lemieux rode horseback in the historic 100th Anniversary Calgary Stampede Parade.
Phil said” If I ever go to the Stampede I want to be a part of it.” Thanks to long-time friend Martha Birkett for supplying his trusty steed “Champagne” who has her own bragging rights. (She was one of the horses Martha used to ride Giddy up for Wishes from Ottawa to Calgary raising over $200,000 for the Children’s Make A Wish Foundation.)
Martha was also instrumental in introducing Phil to Rafter Six Ranch whom he rode with. Rafter Six Ranch in celebration of the 100th Anniversary rode into Calgary with horses and wagons from their Ranch in the Kananaskis to Fort Calgary in time to participate in the parade. Phil commented “It was an honour to be a part of that entry in the parade.” He also mentioned “One thing is for sure there are a lot of Mantracker fans. “
He had a hard time believing how many people recognized him and cheered as he rode by. He even heard from the crowd some people yelling “That’s Phil Lemieux from the Soo and so are we.” Phil summed it up by saying “It’s one ride I will never forget!”
